Emphasizing Business Fundamentals and College readiness by Robyn - November 2021 Scholarship Essay
Classes are undeserving of attention if they don’t grab the mind of the student. Or at least these were my thoughts initially attending high school. A class that deserves more emphasis is a class meant to better the student. Classes that prepare students for life after high school and life after college. Business Fundamentals is a class that focuses on teaching students how to build resumes and cover letters to help them get jobs. This goes hand in hand with college portfolio writing. Resumes are a big deal in college as well as having good customer support skills. Knowing how to talk to people can allow the student more freedom to ask for what they need. As a two-year class, it covers what it takes to apply for a job as well as workplace etiquette. The teacher begins the class with pointers on how to type a resume, cover letter, and other essentials needed for a profile portfolio.
This class needs to be available for all students everywhere because of the valuable information it teaches. Communication skills are perfected as well as resumes for the future whether it is entering college or applying for a job. Having the knowledge taught to you can help you avoid the common resume mistakes made as well as improve your writing skills for college essays. Business Fundamentals does not just cover the basics of a working business and etiquette within it. It also has a second-year portion that covers human resource management and safety. These lessons give the student the knowledge of how to be safe in a business as well as what to do when they feel unsafe. The goal is to prepare students for the workforce. It does that as well as prepare them for college. Many colleges ask for volunteer hours spent with one group as well as if the student has a job or not. Having a resume on hand that has been updated throughout the student's high school career helps. Once a resume is made in the class it is often updated as the students finish high school and before they go to college or straight into the workforce. Having the know-how as well as the guiding hand of a business teacher helps. Business fundamentals is a class that I feel should be emphasized in schools. It is a great high school course that helps students prepare for the outside world.
