Dinner With Jack the Ripper by Robin - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

Although there are little known facts about the London serial killer, the case of Jack the Ripper has been a story of interest to many. Considered a nightmare and, sometimes, a mastermind, Jack the Ripper was never caught for his heinous murders of prostitutes by disembowelment or a slit throat. A couple of letters, which were supposedly written by the murderer himself, were the only traces that the Scotland Yard had. However, many of these letters were considered to be fake; but "The Ripper" gained his title from one of these letters and the name stuck with the mass media that followed the murders. With an estimate of eleven murders between the years 1888 and 1891, the identity of the killer is still a mystery, never giving the poor, murdered women justice. Assuming the dinner would be under safe circumstances, I would dine with Jack the Ripper so I could solve the mystery and put an end to his infamy.
If I were to dine with Jack the Ripper, I would not be disappointed because he is no role model and I do not look up to him; therefore, his morality could not be undermined if he is not highly esteemed in my opinion. All the same, his name has stood the test of time and his notoriety has surpassed many other historical figures. The mortal criminal has become a kind of legend for doing the unthinkable and many view his story with awe. If I could uncover the person, or even persons, behind the murders, their name would not resonate so loudly through time. He was no legend and definitely not a role model, so why do so many people know his story when they can barely remember the events of the Civil War? People have a natural tendency to be curious about unsolved mysteries; and if the truth was revealed, once and for all, people could finally turn their heads towards other, less grim historical figures.
Now, I am not saying in the least that I am not curious myself and that this mystery has never come across my own thoughts. I come across a little hypocritical, but it is for this reason that I believe people should not dwell on such dark topics. Something changes inside of your head and the world becomes all the more cynical. Media coverage on Jack the Ripper and other criminals related to the murder or rape of women has led to a world wide fear that is driven into women and I do not think we should have to live with such fear. If we could get passed spreading fear of suspicious characters and the likes of Jack the Ripper, these crimes might be glorified less. By putting serious crimes, such as murder, to shame might help everyone live with less negativity to contemplate. Let us look towards the good in a future that seems so far, yet may be closer than expected.
