Focus by Robin - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
The New Year's Resolution that will help me become a better student is to learn to limit my focus to specific areas, instead of giving lackluster levels of focus to numerous areas. I often find my head swamped with ideas and concepts I want to eventually draw out on paper, goals I want to accomplish for the day or month, or skills I want to pursue- and this sometimes leads to getting distracted from the current task at hand. So I need to learn to find balance amidst all of my thoughts.
Time is a very valuable thing, and because of this I constantly try to get as much done as I can, which I attempt to accomplish by multitasking- but I've found that sometimes, splitting my attention between different things can end up having the opposite effect, and instead make me take even longer to get everything done. This is a major hindrance when doing schoolwork, or trying to research for a project. So to truly get the most out of my time, and get everything done efficiently and with quality, I will work towards learning to focus myself. I strive to learn to "calm" my thoughts down, so as to prevent mental distractions when in the midst of a task, and to all-around successfully accomplish everything I have in mind.
Overall, finding a balance between being filled with ideas and being focused will help me dearly as a college student. Getting to the point where it becomes a deeply-rooted part of my lifestyle will make it much easier to carry these principles over to a college setting, and allow me to get coursework and projects done more effectively. As I strive towards all I have in mind, applying this goal will probably be one of the best services I could give myself, especially as a student.
