A Man of Integrity: President Franklin D. Roosevelt by Robin - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I could have dinner with any Unites States President, I would choose Franklin D. Roosevelt. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the 32nd President who entered his presidency at arguably the most challenging time in United States' history: The Great Depression. I grew up hearing stories of the Great Depression from my father who knew about the depths of the time from his own father. Franklin D. Roosevelt kept the people of the country encouraged and steadfast in faith. He asserted fear as the enemy, saying, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” in his Inaugural Address.
I believe he is also the most inspiring president because in the year 1921 at just 39 years old, he was diagnosed with polio. He continued to fight for the country despite physical hindrances. During his presidency, by March of 1932 there would be 13,000,000 people unemployed and banks were closing. His first hundred days were dedicated to bringing recovery to not only businesses, but also to the individuals who had lost their jobs. He became an ally to those who were hurting, and even those who were at risk of losing their homes and farms.
By 1935 in the peak of his New Deal program, people were struck with fear. He responded to the people with a new program known as Social Security. This reform is especially near and dear to my heart because my disabled father is now able to take advantage of Social Security, and my family is touched greatly by it. Roosevelt also applied heavier taxes to those who could afford them, bank control policies and work relief program.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt also pledged to the country unique policy known as the “good neighbor,” which caused the Monroe Doctrine to combat aggressors that were putting the country at risk. He aimed to keep the country out of the war in Europe and send Great Britain aid when France fell. He truly cared about the well-being of individual citizens and the country at large. He also devoted time to the United Nations preparations to resolve international trouble. He was truly an example President and I believe that all Presidents after him should follow the lead of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
