It's never too late by Robin - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I were to change what I currently teach, which is Special Education, I would teach Civics and Government. As we have seen the horrendous outcry for change in this country during this election season, and being a teacher, I realize that there is a general lack of knowledge about how our government system began, and the things that have happened along the way to allow the political corruption to invade.

If students were learning at an early age, what our forefathers achieved, and what we as citizens have allowed to happen to what used to be a great system, it may not change immediately, but we could surely see light at the end of the tunnel.

When I had the opportunity to be an inclusion teacher, I was present during Civics and Government. So many students took an active role in learning these subjects once they understood what is always at stake: freedom. That is a concept that youth truly understand.

Because I have become actively involved in the political process, I have found that I can give valid and reliable instruction in these areas, and provide it with confidence. Every teacher wants to be an expert in their field, and I would venture into Civics and Government without reservation.
