The Game of Life by Robert - November 2015 Scholarship Essay
The Game of Life
I am thankful for my education through the game of football. Growing up playing the game of football was a must where I am from. Football teaches young men many life lessons needed to succeed in life. Throughout high school, I have learned that the game is based on X’s and O’s, which means each play is drawn up by a coach for the offense, or the defense, that has a specific job for each person on the field to perform, for the play to be successful.
Teams can be successful without as much talent as other teams, if they have teammates that play with a lot of effort. I have seen teams that are not as talented beat teams that are more talented just because they played harder than them. Effort goes a long way in not just sports, but in life itself. I am thankful for the game of football teaching me that when someone knocks you down that you get right back up and try even harder.
My knowledge of the game has increased dramatically since becoming quarterback my junior year. To play quarterback you have to be a leader, know what everyone’s job is for every play, and know how to read a defensive scheme. You have to be able to tell the offensive coordinator what defensive front the defense is lining up to in certain offensive formations. This allows the offensive coordinators to break the defense down and put the offense in the best possible position to succeed. The offense would be able to run different plays to tear apart the defense until the defense notices what is happening and fixes their defensive front. The offense could run many different plays from a set formation and gash the defense.
Just that little part of football has taught that there are different ways to go in life when life throws an obstacle at you. There are ways in life that will get you a three yard gain and there are ways that will get you an eighty yard touchdown. There are also things in life that will knock you back fifteen yards like a personal foul, how will you respond?
