The Truth of the Situation by Robert - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

This question is actually very prudent to me because I am a senior in high school. So, choosing a good senior quote was one of the many things on my mind coming into this year. A few weeks after this was announced, the day of turn-in came. The night before, I sat in my room, desk lighted by my lamp. The trash can to my right was filled with crumpled paper, lines being filled with rejected quotes. Knowing my time was coming short, I sat back, relaxed, and cleared my head. Any quote that I found any problem with was removed, until finally, I feverishly wrote down my final choice, fearing that I would forget it in the same thought. This quote was, “If high school taught me one thing, it’s that it really do be like that sometimes.” I felt that this quote really encompassed my high-school experience, and how I faced it all.
When I first started high-school, I was a complete mess. The fact that the decisions and mistakes I made in the upcoming four years affected my whole life frightened me. In addition, the social and structural changes in my life seemed like a challenge I would never overcome. All of this stress was ultimately one of the main reasons I chose to make an attempt on my own life in the winter of my freshman year. Luckily, I failed. I found new ways to cope, and after much self-introspection, I realized that I would, in fact, get through this. I was determined to not let the little hiccups in life plague my mind, and soon “It is what it is” became a statement that I would utter whenever one of these hiccups happened. I said it so much that, according to my friends, it became one of my trademarks. This really became prudent during the month of July 2018.
At the beginning of this month, on the 3rd to be exact, I was hit by a car. Luckily, I wasn’t hurt as badly as I could’ve been. So, I moved on. Fast-forwarding to July 23rd, I get ran off the road on the way home from school. Unfortunately, I was not as lucky as last time. The wreck broke my neck and scalped my head. According to 100% of the doctors that came to visit me in my hospital room, it was a miracle I was alive. For all intents and purposes, I should’ve died, but I didn’t. Quite comically, I took the whole thing better than everyone around me. “He’s taking this so well,” was one of the most common things I heard in and out of the hospital. Throughout the whole experience, from getting poles drilled into my head without numbing medicine, to not being able to leave my house for 3 months, my “it is what it is” attitude helped me keep this attitude. Today, I live quite happily and am pleased to report that I have recovered quite well.
So, taking all of this into consideration, my high-school life has not been the easiest, which is exactly why I think my senior quote reflects the year itself, and my attitude towards it all. Simply, that it really do be like that sometimes, and if one lets the challenges and obstacles of life hold them down, they won’t get anywhere.
