An Inclusive Student Body President by Robert - July 2018 Scholarship Essay
As student body president, I think that the number one way that I can impact my school is to work to support an inclusive school culture. College is a time of great challenge, change and growth. It is an opportunity not only to learn new skills that will help each student to build a life and a career, it is also a time to develop an understanding of new and different people, new and different cultures. It is a time to become a citizen of the world. It is a time to greatly expand our horizons and develop new relationships. Some of these relationships will hopefully last all our lives. It is therefore very important that each student feel safe, respected and included in the life of the school.
This feeling of inclusion is vital. My school can’t only have a written commitment and a slogan about inclusion. It must also have a plan that explains how inclusion will be achieved in the life of the school. As president of the student body, I would make it a priority to work with the school administration on that plan. Our school will be best when each student can contribute to the culture of the school. It is important that each student feels included, especially those that are different racially, culturally, nationally and by gender. The overall culture and the dominant cultural, racial and gender groups should strive to be welcoming. With an inclusive and welcoming student body, my school will become a model school for an inclusive world where everyone feels a part, and everyone contributes. That is the way that I would seek to that an impact as the student body president.
