Volleyball saved me by Robert - January 2017 Scholarship Essay

Volleyball saved me - by giving me something to believe in and a way to show people that I am capable of hard work, dedication and passion. School has never come easy for me. My passion for volleyball is something that has had an impact on all areas of my life. Playing volleyball has helped strengthen me physically and emotionally and to develop social skills, a solid work ethic and a dedication to working with others.

Volleyball saved me - it created a drive in me to help others achieve new heights. My passion for volleyball does not end with my own skill development, I am also dedicated to helping younger volleyball players. I believe adolescent males need positive role models in their lives; to help live out that personal value I volunteer as a coach for the grade school I attended when I was younger. I had a hard time in school when I was younger and I know that having something that you excel at can make a big difference. Through volleyball I feel that I have been able to serve as both a positive role model and a mentor to younger players, not only working to develop their volleyball skills on the court, but their “life” skills as well.

Volleyball saved me - it has provided me the opportunity to prove my ability and worth and allowed me to make my personal mark in the world; allowing me to live out my personal value of being a positive male role model for young males. Volleyball has enhanced my development as a caring, motivated, dedicated person who understands that passion for something can give your life direction and purpose.

Volleyball saved me - I know I will not be a professional volleyball player, but volleyball helped me to understand that I can make a difference in my community through my career as well. My long range career goal is to become a community police officer. I believe that I have the ability to interact in an open, caring way with many different types of people. There is a need for Community police officers who live and work in the own communities. When officers live and interact with community residents, agencies and business they develop relationships that are built on respect and equality. Mutual respect is what strengthens a community; when I am a police officer I plan to help create and support that type of community development to help repair some of the distrust that has become far too common. Volleyball saved me!
