They changed my life by Robbi - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

The idea to start my own business all started when I had the opportunity to do an internship while in high school. My internship was at a therapeutic preschool for children in high risk situations or for children who had been through traumatic experiences or simply needed the extra attention. I instantly feel in love with every kid there and wanted to give them my entire world. I soon realized that all I could give them was a couple hours of my time during the day. I then came to the conclusion that I wanted to do more. I contacted local churches and raised money and clothes to donate to the preschool. My single employee business consists of calling local churches and welfare centers for clothes and donations. I also strive to donate my time to children. I have donated over 200 hours of my time to children in just the past 8 months (August-March).

When my time at the preschool was coming to an end, I realized how hard a job in social work would be. I have never felt such sadness having to leave those kids. They have inspired me to do more in the world. They have shaped me into the person that I am today. I will never forget the love and happiness they brought to class, even though I knew they were getting abused at home and the only meals they would eat in a day were the ones I served to them. I couldn't be more excited to expand my business one day and be able to serve the children of America.

These experiences have given me an idea of leadership. I have learned the pros and cons of leadership and I believe I have gained a strong understanding of the characteristics that come along with being a leader. In regards or college I believe that no matter what you do, you could do it better if you were a leader. On the other hard I do not believe being a leader is necessary for college success. I believe this because when one is a leader they are going to be looked at the most opening doors for after college success. Leaders also gain many emotions and characteristics that one could not gain anywhere else. But success comes from within and one mans success differs from another.
