Her Expanding Mind by Rivkah - December 2014 Scholarship Essay
I recently read the novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I enjoyed it not only for its eloquence, but also for its profound effect on me. Jane, a plain and simple girl, one who has endured so much suffering, still finds beauty in life. She continues to live by enriching her mind. She originally acquired her studious nature from her boarding school; but afterwards, she continued to further her understanding in the branches of academia that she found interesting, and shared her experience with those around her. She did this in a passionate and consistent manner.
In short, Jane inspired me. I have always been a good student, but until I read this book, I never fully comprehended the pure joy one can achieve from education. Although learning itself can be a painstaking process, the exhilarated state-of-mind experienced afterwards is more than worth all the effort.
After reading Charlotte Bronte’s famous novel, I see the world of education and academics in a different light. I now understand how the prospect of self-betterment and the satisfaction of learning can drive someone to devote their entire life to educating others and themselves.
As a result, I understand how education has shaped me in an unexpected and wonderful way. I now strive to further educate myself, and help the people around me understand the importance and beauty of learning. My world and future is brighter, more exciting, and more challenging.
Education has shaped me today by making me realize the power of knowledge, its profound effect on the people who receive it, and the radical changes it can produce in a persons disposition and peace of mind. Without education, I wouldn't have been able to read this inspiring novel that made me realize the extent to which education improves a person's life.
As Aristotle said: “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet”.
I am different today because I have experienced the sweetness of this fruit, and have a new-found desire to share its sweetness with others.
