Holograms: Our Future by Riley - February 2018 Scholarship Essay
Twenty years ago, nobody imagined that an inhuman object, less than a pound, would be able to answer any question with the sound of a voice, contact somebody in less than a millisecond, hold files, HD pictures and videos, view the constellations, video call, pay for items in a store, all with one touch of a button. This touch screen cell phone, most popularly referred to as the “iPhone” made from “Apple Inc.” (an American multinational technology company) has changed our entire nation within the past 10 years. The impact of this device has completely molded the way this generation of kids have grown up. It impossible to say you wouldn’t be able to observe a classroom of middle school or high school students all with an iPhone or smart phone sitting at their desk in arms reach. About 5 years ago the rules in schools were that a student could not be in possession of their phone for the entire school day while on school property. Now, it is that such schools have changed their cell phone policies because kids have made it absolutely impossible for teachers to reprimand them for disobeying the school laws and using their devices.
Although, and to many kid’s appreciation, teachers have allowed students to keep their phones out and have noticed that students have been able to use them in a classroom setting and be able to stay on task and get their work done, and even use it as a resource for their school work, finding new information, apps to help them study, tutoring videos and many other very helpful aids. This technique of teaching has become very popular and that in most schools there is no longer a “NO cellphone” policy. Using cell phones in class has turned some school classrooms mandatory for requiring an iPad (Apple’s tablet computer) so students can get their daily work done and turned in all via the internet. This company has also produced watches, computers, and projectors for the teacher’s use.
Believe it or not, without this technology, a modern classroom would just not operate the same. The question is, in 20 years what about these products are going to be further advanced that we will not be able to educate without, that we could not dream of today? My answer is: holographic technology. Holograms are 3D images formed by light beams from a laser or another light source. The multi-dimensional appearance results from the interference pattern of two beams reflecting an object. Students can benefit from this experience while also gaining intermediate skills. This high tech interface allows educators to provide a better form of knowledge with less complicated lectures and a more hands on experience. Students who lack motor skills or coordination can play and learn with the holograms in our own world— as we are just watching it from fictional television series like Star Wars and Iron Man. The Koreans recently showed off their technological advances in the Winter Olympics Opening show.
Technology companies are working on holographic science currently in hopes to advance our world like never before. Holograms take science experiments to a whole new level, allowing us to create anything we want hands on! It could show us historic events as if we were actually there. Students would greatly excel in school and success rates would increase, in theory that learners would be more active in the classroom more than ever. Education would take off like a rocket in 20 years if education was based off this form of technology. Teachers could educate from anywhere to anywhere in the world as video calling would be a physical level with holograms. Furthermore, holograms could be our future, and it would sure make society spin. This futuristic approach seems to make sense each and everyday with the way our nation runs on “Wi-Fi.” Holograms will be, without a doubt, an integral part of education in the year 2038.
