Why do I want to go to college? by Ricardo - November 2023 Scholarship Essay

My name is Ricardo Herrera Moore. I am 18 years old and the youngest of 4. Currently, I am attending South Albany High School. I am an AVID tutor and AVID leadership president. I don’t just want to go to college because it was my parents dream for me, I want to go to college because I understand the concept of being willing to put in hard work while your young will get you anywhere in life.
I grew up with a single father from a different country who didn't even know the language and a mother who was either in jail or high somewhere. That has led to me being proactive and resilient. I have learned to overcome obstacles that ordinary teens have yet to encounter. That is the reason why college to me has always been a dream of mine. It's not an escape but a new opportunity to create a better life for myself and the generations after me I want to be the one to break the cycle.
I want to go to college and get a degree in either engineering or business because to me those were my childhood dreams. I knew I was smart like an engineer but I am also outgoing and always looking for opportunities like a businessman. That is why I would like to pursue my education to be a better productive member of society.
