Some Easy, Others Not by Renee - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
I have always detested writing, so of course I chose an english major. Although I hate writing, I enjoy reading. I grasped it early on and have read many novels in my eighteen years on this planet. Additionally, I enjoy editing other people’s writings. Fixing grammar makes me happy. Using my love of editing and reading, I want to be an editor.
Since before I was in kindergarten, I have read numerous books, from ten page easy readers now to thousand page novels. In early elementary school my favorite book series was Kiki Thorpe’s The Never Girls. I tried to collect them all. After I finished that, I started reading Narnia and then later The Lord of the Rings. In middle school, my parents ordered an electronics detox. That is when it really started. Because I was no longer allowed on my tablet, I ought a novel and read for multiple hours a day. Since then I always have a novel in hand. Flipping through a book magazine, I came across an interesting looking book and bought it. The Ravenwood Saga immediately became my favorite book series, and its author, Morgan L. Busse, is my all time favorite author. The Ravenwood Sage, Narnia, and The Never Girls are just some of the many many books I have read.
Grammar brings me joy. More specifically, editing grammatical errors makes me jubilant. Since I enjoy fixing mistakes, Fix-it Grammar was the perfect grammar curriculum for me. Unlike normal grammar curriculums, Fix-it has you edit and label actual sentences in actual stories. Through Fix-it, I learned a lot about sentence structure, punctuation, and clauses. Additionally, I am in charge of editing my siblings’ papers, which is a job I really enjoy. Since I like editing so much, my cousin requested that I edit a book she and her friends were writing. All in all, I really like editing and grammar.
I used to hate, no, detest writing because I just did not get it. I had the thoughts and ideas there in my head, but they were stuck. No matter how hard I tried, they would not transfer to paper; instead, tears flowed down my face. Although we tried many curriculums that weren’t for me, we eventually found the one. IEW taught writing in such a way that I understood. Using key word outlines, I was finally able to get my thoughts on paper. I finally got it. My disdain for writing diminished as I learned to organize my thoughts and ideas.
Reading before kindergarten, editing for fun, and writing with tears, I’ll be an english major. Although some things came easy and others not, I love everything the english major entails.
