How Reading Prompted a Passion for Engineering by Rena - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, I could spend the entire day reading, lost between the pages of "The Hobbit" or entrapped within the world of Elizabeth Bennett. Soon this love for reading transpired into a passion for writing. I fell in love with the very concept of the written word. One can express beauty, love, and nature within a single poem. How incredible is that?

Pursuing a biomedical engineering degree and having a passion for reading and writing may not seem to have a lot of crossover, but for me, they are intrinsically tied. As I started high school, my reading repertoire expanded to include a plethora of nonfiction books. Whether an article on Mendel genetics or an exploration into human anatomy, I began to view the sciences with a renewed interest. The same fondness I have for the physical description of the natural world I also have for the inner workings of it all. Chemistry, physics, algebra, and biology excite me to no end. They help to explain the beauty I see in nature.

Where it all started was an innate desire to learn. Reading and writing enabled me to pursue these interests that have quickly become strong passions. My intention is to participate in some type of sarcoma research and be involved in medical missions.
