My Hope for the Future of Education by Remington - September 2025 Scholarship Essay
When I think about the future of education, I picture a world where every student has the chance to dream big and actually make those dreams a reality regardless of where they live. . Growing up in a small rural area, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges that students face simply because of where they live. Over the next ten years, I hope to see education become more accessible, more affordable, and more fair for everyone.
The first change I hope to see is more Highschool opportunities for students in small towns like mine. My school is in a small town with less then 300 citizens, 67 students k-12. My class is only 9 students and it’s the biggest class in our school. In rural schools, we often have limited sports teams, few clubs, and hardly any leadership opportunities compared to the larger schools in neighbor areas. If you want to join a debate team, a robotics club, or even a drama production, there’s nothing available… We don’t have band, football, or FBLA. Not because kids wouldn’t join, but because there aren’t enough resources, coaches, or teachers. Over the next decade, I would love to see more funding directed toward rural schools so that students like me can have the same chance to try new things, grow as leaders, and discover passions outside of the classroom. With out these things not only can we not be as competitive as we are trying to apply to the university of our choice, but we are easily beat out of most scholarship opportunities as well.
Another major change I hope for, is reducing the cost of college education. Right now, going to college often means starting life in debt. Students shouldn’t have to spend years paying off loans just to earn a degree and get a job. Education should be an opportunity, not a financial burden. I believe that over the next ten years, we need to push for lower tuition rates, more scholarships, and better financial aid programs so that students from all backgrounds can pursue higher education without being weighed down by money worries. I wonder statistically how many students choose to skip higher education simply because it’s not affordable for them.
I also think it should be easier to attend a school close to home, even if it’s just across the state border, without having to pay higher tuition. For many rural students, the closest university or community college might be in another state, for me, there is a university only 20 min away, but out-of-state tuition cost makes it impossible for me to attend. Ten years from now, I hope we see more agreements between states to make tuition fair for students who live near the border. Where you live shouldn’t limit where you can go to school, especially when your goal is to stay close to family and your community.
If these changes happened, education would be more fair, more inclusive, and more supportive of students’ futures. Education is supposed to be the foundation for our future. Over the next ten years, I hope it becomes something that truly gives everyone a fair start in life.
