Life Lessons from a Teacher by Reganne - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

In fourth grade I had a teacher named, Mrs. Fisher. She was my teacher for all of the core subjects. She taught me all the normal English things, such as parts of speech, and annotating. She taught me math and history. However, Mrs. Fisher taught me much more. She taught me about life. She did not just teach me about life, she taught every student that entered her classroom about life. I remember during the first week of school, she taught the boys how to hold the doors open for girls. She was the type of teacher who demanded respect, but she also made sure that each one of her students knew they were important.
One time I was struggling with dividing fractions. Instead of making me stay in during recess, so that she could enjoy a peaceful lunch, like most teacher would, she told me to come in during lunch, so that I did not miss my recess. After that lunch, I was so much more confident with it. She taught me that nothing was too hard to not be done. She also taught me that while studies have to be done, it’s okay to take a break and have some fun every once in a while.
Eight years later, and I am getting ready for my senior year. I am going to college to major in elementary education in both the typical classroom, and the special needs classroom. Now I realize a bigger lesson that she taught me. She taught me the kind of a teacher I want to be.
