A Passion Films Gifted Me by Regan - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
From the earliest I could remember, I have had a life where I was looking in on everyone, from being excluded and ridiculed by my classmates to constantly being interrupted by my family. I felt out of place everywhere I went, even when I should have been making lively, long-lasting memories. It was excruciatingly lonely, but all of this has led me to find an escape into the world of movies and television, and before I knew it, it was my sole source of enjoyment.
This mental diversion helped me process the issues going on in school and allowed me to see the world in a new light, a light the films or shows focused on. The characters I related to or strived to be on the screen fostered my interest in becoming a film director. Not just any director, but one where kids who grew up like me can escape, and find the same happiness and healing just as I did. Without the world of film, I would not be here today and definitely would not have the same type of motivation I do to pursue film.
The steps I have taken to reach my goal consist of partaking in film camps, practicing filming, researching film equipment, sharing my films with friends for feedback, and discussing films with people who are experienced in the field. Each step has led me to where I am today and has helped me build my passion for my ideas to be put out in the world. This is why I am choosing Radio-Television-Film as my major, to be a director kids can watch and heal from but also find enjoyment in, as I once experienced.
