Higher Education Higher Expenses by Regan - July 2022 Scholarship Essay
The price of education should not be detrimental to the student’s future, no matter what that student may want to achieve. For example, medical school is not always an option for people who grew up in lower-income households or people in minority groups. The cost of medical school is exorbitant, and that is not including the cost to apply to medical school. Most, if not all medical schools require the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) which is not cheap and requires a rigorous studying schedule to get a competitive score. Applications for medical schools are not free, and there are not one but two applications for every school you want to apply for. Also, adding in travel expenses if you are selected for an interview can be costly. None of this equates to getting accepted into medical school. Medical schools have low acceptance rates, and it is not uncommon for applicants to re-apply the following year.
In short, the cost of education, especially higher education, should not have long-lasting effects on an individual’s financial success. I hope that in the future there will be a change in the costs of higher education because one should not have to suffer financially just because they want to get an associate or a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, Ph. D M.D., etc. No matter where someone comes from or what they have been through, any individual should be able to go to school and not have financial issues looming over their heads for years to come. Education should be something that is affordable and nondiscriminatory. Education should be available to anyone and everyone who will put the work into accomplishing that degree or certification.
