Bringing change to social work by Rebekah-Leigh - June 2020 Scholarship Essay

I hope that when I become a social worker, I will make a lasting positive impact on other individuals' lives. Being a social worker to me means helping those that cannot or do not have the capabilities or knowledge to access programs that could help them. These programs provided by the government and nonprofits allow individuals to strengthen themselves and better their futures. If an individual is able to better him or herself, he or she will also be able to positively impact those around them too.
Being a social worker means being an advocate to those who are disadvantaged. Since so many are disadvantaged in our communities, I plan to advocate for these individuals. Becoming a social worker would allow me to give a voice to those who need help and are struggling. I am very passionate about other people's wellbeing, even if I don’t know the person. Everyone has something to offer, and I want to allow everyone a fair chance at showcasing that something. Through social work I would be able to continue taking care of others, making sure they get the proper resources to better their lives. I like the ideals of social work because helping those in need not only improves my community, but future generations as well through the ripple effect. Being able to reform someone's life into something better so that they have more opportunities, might result in others around that individual to try and better themselves as well. Helping one person by improving their life is just how I intend to bring change to my intended career field. I feel that when I become a social worker, I can help individuals become the best versions of themselves, resulting in more people paying it forward to others.
