Students should not be required to study abroad by Rebekah - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
It should not be required for students to study abroad in college. It is extremely expensive, and not all students can afford to pay for college let alone a semester abroad. Also even though opportunity provides experience, there are plenty of jobs that don’t require that amount of experience therefor making the process unnecessary.
College can be extremely expensive depending on whether or not the student chooses to study at a private university or a public. The cost of the university alone can put the student in thousands of dollars of debt. Imagine adding onto the cost of the university, with the price of traveling to another country. The expense of the plane ticket is enough to scare any eager knowledge-seeking student away from a semester abroad. Then on top of that add on food, lodging, and expenses that come up along the way and that comes out to tens of thousands of dollars. For any student who has to work to put themselves through college how is it fair to require them to pay more money. How much more debt would the students be in, if they were in fact required to study abroad.
Requiring the students to travel abroad would not only add to their large debts but it would be for no reason. Even though traveling abroad provides learning experience to the students, not all jobs require that amount of experience. For example, someone who is an electrician, or an engineer should not be required to go abroad. What experience could going abroad provide to someone, that staying at home in a more affordable environment could not? So many students take out loans, just to be able to afford a normal university, why are we making them take out more loans just so they can experience something that isn’t necessary to their every day lives. Just think about the amount of times a student uses what they learned in London for the two weeks they were there in their job as an engineer. Why would the universities require something that is extremely expensive if it is completely unnecessary?
In conclusion, the requiring of students to study abroad is absurd. It adds thousands of dollars to student loans, which could affect the path of the students, lives later. It is also completely unnecessary for certain professions that don’t require these certain experiences.
