10 Years from Now? by Rebecca - December 2015 Scholarship Essay
I knew from an early age that I would be a teacher. Not many people can say they know what they want to be when they grow up and mean it, but I could. From the time I could be trusted to babysit the neighbor’s children, I knew teaching was my life calling. So where do I see myself 10 years from now? This is a great question, which I have been asked time and time again. While, I can’t really say where I will be in 10 years, I can say that I do have a goal in mind. My goal is to teach teachers to teach, and I plan to obtain my Doctorate of Education to accomplish this goal.
A Passion to Teach
However, it was during my first year as a teacher that I began to develop a passion for training others to teach. I observed many first year teachers and the challenges they faced, and knew that it was especially difficult for them. They were clearly not trained or prepared nearly as well as they could be, especially those coming from certain small private schools. As I observed this year after year, my passion grew, and I began partnering with the schools I taught at to mentor first year teachers through first year challenges.
Achieving My Goal
My passion for mentoring and training teachers has not yet been snuffed out. I still desire to further my education, so that I can further the education of those individuals who also have a passion to teach. In order to do this, I plan to obtain my Doctorate in Education, so that I may teach at university and teach future teachers to teach.
I am currently enrolled in a Ed.D program at Oakland City University. The goal of this program is designed to educate those wanting to become educational leaders. I will take courses in leadership, curriculum and development, and many other courses that are designed to help me accomplish my goal. While I don’t exactly know where I will be in 10 Years, I do know that I will continue to strive towards my goal, no matter how long it takes.
