Why He's Amazing by Rebecca - September 2013 Scholarship Essay
Ernesto was fun, intelligent, humble, a National Merit Scholar, graduate from the Metro Technologies Center’s Biomedical Science Academy, Valedictorian of the Aztec Charter High School class of 2013 and is a current freshman at the University of Chicago. He is also one of my closest friends and someone I consider to be very admirable. And there are a few reasons for that.
As intelligent as he is, he is simple. He has simple joys and does not require a lot of material items or money to make him happy. He can watch cartoons and browse Redit all day, and that is a successful day to him. It is also quite humorous to hear of his findings the following morning.
When he is not on Redit, he is busy being one of the most awkward individuals I know. He does not like any type of physical displays of affection and shy’s away from compliments, which my friends and I showered him with when he thought he wouldn’t make National Merit Scholar or get into the University of Chicago, and after he achieved both. Everyone that knows him knows that being shy is his way of being humble. He doesn’t need praise or feel the need to gloat, even with his amazing grades and achievements to back him up.
And he knows he is not perfect. He used to come in every morning telling us how he was up doing his homework until four o’clock that morning! He even did his eight National Merit Scholar essays last minute a week before they were due! He is a huge procrastinator, but he still somehow gives his all to every assignment and is an amazing person to have to work with on any assignment. He does not try to take control of the project and gives his input just like everyone else.
All-and-all, Ernesto always inspired me with his intellect and work ethic when we were paired together or in the same class. Being around him and his energy made me want to do better in everything that I strived for. That’s why he is my academic role model. The reasons above and because he is a great friend!
