Skills I gained in the year 2021 by Rebecca - January 2022 Scholarship Essay
Throughout the 2021 year, a lot of things have happened that changed the daily lives of everyone. These big changes forced a lot of people to adapt to the new changes and overcome obstacles they thought they would never have to face. For me it was having to adapt to remote schooling and work. Remote schooling meant to regular in person lectures with teachers and other peers to assist me schoolwork, so I had to learn to teach myself a lot of it and count on myself to get everything done. The specific skills I gained from this past year includes time management, self-discipline, problem solving, scheduling, and multi-tasking. My new work from home job played a big part in helping me time manage. With a full time, school schedule and full-time job, I had no choice but to start mapping out my assignments and when I had chances to do them. I got into the habit of doing a lot of reading well I was with family or out and about. Time management quickly became my favorite thing and life saver. Remote schooling became beneficial in the sense that I didn’t have to sit through lectures and could work on the assignments, but it meant doing it on my own time and mostly on my own. I have always been a bit of a loner and preferred to do things on my own but learned to ask questions and even reach out to other students. Although I id learn to communicate better, I still had the urge to figure things out on my own, whether I used Google or YouTube I was determined to use my brain and do it myself. When all else failed then I asked for help.
Another skill set of skills I learned was patience and anger management. From time-to-time internet would go out and I would be doing a test, so I would have to remember to breath and remember to time manage and not do things last minute so I wouldn’t have to raise against time. Besides school and work, I also learned about myself. I became aware of what I like and what I didn’t like and decide to make changes for the better. I learned to let go of things I couldn’t change and to focus on the present. Overall, 2021 brought a ton of new challenges for a lot of people, but it also brought tons of opportunity to better oneself and grow in more ways than one. All the skills I learned helped me to better myself and get a clear path in mind of where I was and where I want to be in the future.
