From Seats to the Board by Rebecca - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If taught right, history can change any student’s outlook on life, and it takes a special teacher to take on that task. If I was given the opportunity to switch roles with a teacher, I would love to express the wonder and value that history has to offer to everyone’s life. I have always been intrigued by the thought that hundreds of years ago, life was not the way it is today. It’s very important to express the differences and how the world ended up the way it did to understand what can, and will, happen in the future.
The world was started from microscopic cells that evolved into humans, which in turn, created an advanced world with millions of opportunities. Without knowing how all of that was possible, how can someone understand how fortunate they are? History does not just create unanswered questions that students seek to answer, but it also creates opportunities for students to understand other ways of life. In order to be a humble and well-rounded human being, you have to be able to understand other’s beliefs and morals, and there is no better way than to learn through your history class.
History offers a wide range of doors that a student can learn from. If someone is not interested in German history, they can focus on another region of the world, unlike math where you have to start from the bottom and work up. This offers people the chance to find something they like but not be held back from possibilities.
This subject has always been my favorite because there has never been a dull moment in history and there is no end to what a person can learn. Even if I do not become a history teacher, I will continue to expand my knowledge and express to others what they are missing out on by not catching up on history.
