Be Kind by Rebecca - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Every weekday, you go to school. At school, you are taught things, including how to find the area of a circle and who wrote the Declaration of Independence. These things are taught to you by teachers who want to see you succeed in life. But teachers teach more than that; they teach you lessons for life. The most important of which, in my case, was to be kind.
Although it is hard, being kind is one of the most important things a person can learn to do. Everyone has rough days, and everyone needs to be encouraged. Why not be the person that sheds that light on their life? Nothing exceedingly difficult must be done in order to make someone’s day easier.
It was my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Gagliano, who taught me this crucial life lesson. She taught me many things, but being kind was, I believe, the most valuable and most significant. I realize I have not abided by this principle consistently, but I try. I understand that I have no right to treat someone else as if they are beneath me. Who am I to tell somebody that I am better than them? The world would be a better place if more people recognized this truth.
The most important lesson I have learned from a teacher is to be kind. You never know whose day will be brighter, whose step will be lighter, or whose head will be held higher because of your small act of kindness.
