POP THE BUBBLE!! by Rebecca - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

We are all born in a bubble, yes a bubble, and most of us carry out the rest of our lives in that very same bubble. Sounds boring right? Do not worry, it does not have to be this way. Although we have all heard the expression “ignorance is bliss,” or “the less you know the better,” we should not pay any attention to these sayings because they are far from being truthful.
Since the beginning of time people all around the world have sought to obtain information through various methods such as experimentation or exploration. The reason being fairly evident, knowledge is power. Why else did our great ancestors travel the seas, if not for the purpose of discovering what lied beyond their bubble. To be completely ignorant of all the things that go on outside of it where we live is not something would should aspire to achieve. Some may claim that anything they need to know can be obtained through resources such as books, television or the internet. However, these people do not realize that even with a vast amount of resources, they cannot possibly incorporate every detail because nobody wants to know every single aspect of something. The only way an individual can truly understand another country’s culture or way of living is to experience it first hand because there are details left unwritten and words left unspoken because people only tell you what you want to hear. Sure you can learn about something but that does not mean you truly understand it. To walk a mile in another person's shoes so to speak.
The only way an individual can learn about the world is if they pop their bubble. Now you mustn't worry or fret because once you pop that bubble you can create an even bigger one and if for some reason you do not like this new bubble then you can always return to your old one. This is one of the wonderful aspects of studying abroad, you get to travel to another country and learn about their culture for a small period of time.
