Art as a Way to Impact the World by Reanna - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

Art has always been a central part of who I am. From sketching in the margins of my notebooks to designing digital graphics in my free time, I’ve found joy in creating things that are visually striking and meaningful. Choosing Graphic Design as my major felt like a natural step. It allows me to turn my love for art into a career while continuing to explore my creative side. Graphic Design is more than just making things look good; it’s about communication, emotion, and impact. It gives me the ability to create something that not only catches the eye but also tells a story and evokes feelings.

One of the most powerful aspects of art, and by extension, graphic design, is its ability to move people. A single image can create feelings of awe, happiness, sadness, or nostalgia. That emotional power is something I’ve always been drawn to. I love the idea that through design, I can control how people feel, even if only for a moment. Whether it’s a poster that inspires, a logo that builds brand identity, or a layout that communicates a powerful message, design gives me a way to speak without words. That’s what excites me most, the ability to influence people through creativity and visual storytelling.

Graphic Design also appeals to my desire to constantly create and explore new ideas. No two projects are exactly alike, and I enjoy the challenge of finding the best visual solution for each one. Whether it’s choosing the right color scheme, experimenting with typography, or figuring out the perfect composition, I’m always engaged and learning. This field allows me to push boundaries, stay curious, and keep evolving as both an artist and a communicator. It blends creativity with strategy, and I love being at the intersection of both.

In addition to personal fulfillment, I see Graphic Design as a path to a flexible and meaningful career. Design is everywhere — in advertising, social media, websites, packaging, and branding. The skills I develop in this major can be applied across a wide range of industries and platforms. That versatility gives me confidence in my future and motivates me to keep growing as a designer. I know I’ll always have the opportunity to express myself while making a difference in how people see and feel about the world around them.

In the end, I chose Graphic Design because it allows me to do what I love: make art that matters. It lets me channel my creativity, shape emotion, and leave a visual impact on others. For me, that’s not just a major—it’s a passion and a purpose.
