The First Step to Growing Up by Reann - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
Before entering high school little things such as what was "cool" at the time was the most important thing to me. I did not fully understand how to be independent; I would not do anything unless one of my friends was also going to do it. As I got older I realized I did not know how to do anything that I really needed to know because I would not allow myself to take risks in life. I could not write a check or even go to the dentist without my mom and did not want to ask for help because I thought that people would make fun of me for not knowing how to do easy things. Not knowing what to do was not the issue not asking for help was.
My advice to younger students is experience as much as you can. Do not let anything hold you back from your goals and always set new ones. Get involved in school and the community around you. The things you learn from getting involved in the community is advice you can hold on to for the rest of your life. The more experience you get when you are young the easier life's difficulties become. If you do not think you know how to do something always ask for help even when you think you will feel insecure. No one is perfect and people will always make mistakes. Enjoy being young before the stress of being fully independent sets in. The most important advice I would give is be yourself even when you think that is not good enough.
