History Teacher in the Making by Reagan - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

One subject that I have come to love dearly is history. I have always been fascinated with it and historical events that have happened in the past like WW1, WW2, and the Civil Rights Movement. In my high school career, I have had three different history teachers but only one truly taught me and showed me how cool learning about history was. Mr. Schelb is one of the best teachers in all my twelve years of school. My junior year was when I took an interest and began asking questions and watching documentaries on history topics. I’ve read countless books and articles about WW2 and the holocaust.
We took a deep dive in my sophomore year which encouraged me to continue my studies. My senior year I needed an extra class so Mr. Schelb informed me that his class was amazing and I should join it. I happily agreed to do it because he is one of my favorite teachers and the class is a college course so I HAD to take it. Since taking this class I have buckled down and engaged in learning about history on my own time. I have read so many books about the Civil War and documentaries about the American Revolution. Taking this course has helped me understand why history is so important and have a new appreciation for historians.
This is also why I plan on studying history in the future and becoming a history teacher. I have wanted to go into teaching but never had any specific thing I wanted to do. I love learning about history and teaching kids about it in a fun way makes me feel good that I can show them a good time.
