You're Free to Express Yourself As Long As I Agree by Raven - August 2014 Scholarship Essay
During my first year of school I faced many challenges, I had to learn to be self-reliant and that I had to study. Procrastination and slacking wouldn't cut it. I also learned that even though some professors say you can express yourself however you wish, they really mean express yourself in a way I like.
In my religious studies class we had to do a personal theology, the sister teaching the class said to pick any medium that aptly demonstrated our personal theology. I chose to do a collage about being happy. I put pictures of things that made me happy, it was everything from food to family to partying. I explained on the back that while I did believe in God my personal theology didn't revolve around Him. It was about finding my happiness. My teacher hated it. I think it was mainly because God wasn't at the center of my theology like everyone else's. I have since learned to judge my professors and their wants. It was a hard lesson to learn but it made it easier to handle the rest of the semester. I was prepared to write a term paper that catered to how she wanted us to think. This failure hurt my pride but made me even more determined to succeed.
