Creativity Spurs by Raquel - October 2015 Scholarship Essay
Education, by definition, should be an enlightening experience and especially for high school students that are typically unsure of what professional career to pursue. Choosing a career shouldn’t solely be based on the field that one has a better average grade, but rather a career one can truly see oneself passionately working for the rest of their lives. For that reason, extracurricular activities are often the only activities where students are allowed to use their own imagination and create creative content or simply practice their passion.
When I graduated from high school in 2013, I had been involved in various clubs but only continued throughout those four years with soccer and photography club. In my freshmen year, I decided be part of a government club of the city of Worcester, one that was fundamental in helping my public speaking skills. Up to that point, I always felt shy and timid when speaking in front of even few people. Not only did that experience gave me skills that have been vital for my career as a business entrepreneur, but rather it helped me realize that law was something my parents aspired I would pursue, not my true passion.
It was in my photography club where I realized my love for creating creative content, and that desire is something I hope to use in a professional career. Due to these extracurricular activities I was able to realize what were my real passions and it would not have been possible if these after school activities were somehow canceled. I strongly believe that with through extracurricular events, high school students have the chance to make people with similar interests, learn more about their own selves and especially learn skills such as time management, public speaking, and intercultural skills that will be extremely helpful in college and in the workforce.
