A First-Generation College Student's Journey: Fulfilling Dreams and Creating Legacies by Rany - November 2023 Scholarship Essay

There are many reasons for why a student would embark on the road to a higher education. They may have hopes of creating a better life for themselves, they might want to achieve what has never been done in their family, or they might just have a general curiosity and hunger for knowledge. Regardless of the motivation they have for pursuing a higher education they all seek the acceptance of a college. My purpose for going to college is a little mixture of all three things I mentioned above: I will be a first-generation college student in my family, I have a hunger for knowing what things are and how they work, and I want to create the best life for myself and the people around me. I am determined and driven to do whatever it takes to get accepted into a good college that can satisfy the criteria I have set for myself so I may be successful.
The idea of obtaining a higher education through college in a family where the idea of college was more of a distant dream than an attainable goal, the prospect of pursuing higher education had always felt like a daunting challenge. I come from a background where my parents and grandparents never had the privilege of accessing a college education. Their lives were marked by hard work, resilience, and unwavering determination, but the educational opportunities that I have access to today were not readily available to them. My decision to pursue a college education is not merely an individual choice but a representation of the aspirations and dreams of my family.
I want to continue on my path of education because I see it as the key to unlocking my full potential. It is an opportunity to equip myself with knowledge and skills that can empower me to make a meaningful impact on society, my family, and my life.College helps you explore and discover who you are and how to become the best version of yourself and where you are most needed/wanted. As a first-generation student, I am determined to seize this opportunity to learn, grow, and become a well-rounded individual, not just for my own benefit but for the benefit of my family and community.
Overall, being a first-generation college student is an accomplishment that brings a sense of pride to my family name, and inspires other young members in my family to chase their education as well. It will serve as a personal testimony to once again prove to not only myself but my whole family that with enough hard work, perseverance, and determination we can pursue a higher education as well. When I am striving for this higher education, I feel as if I have to be relentless; I feel as if I am not only carrying my hopes and dreams on my shoulders as I embark on this journey, but the hopes and dreams of my parents and the generation that came before them as well. After all the sacrifices they have made to get me here I have to pursue my education and create a life worth living for myself and my parents.
Furthermore, pursuing a college education as a first-generation student is a means to break the cycle of poverty in my family's history, take a step in a direction that provides limitless opportunity, and create the life of my dreams. College to me represents an already vast land of opportunity getting broader and brighter. By acquiring a college degree, I am equipping myself with the tools to access better career opportunities, financial stability, and a chance to improve the quality of life for my family.
In conclusion, my desire to go to college not only fueled my ambition to expand my knowledge and create a wonderful life for myself, but to bring pride to my family name, and help them elevate with me.This type of accomplishment will not only inspire the younger member of my family to embark on a similar journey, but inspire generations to come. Through education, I can acquire the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful contribution to society and, in doing so, create a legacy of achievement and inspiration for my family. As I embark on this journey, I will stop at nothing to achieve the goals I have set for myself, because this road is bigger than just me or my immediate family, this is a decision that could impact generations to come in my family.
