A Vision For The Future by Ralph - April 2020 Scholarship Essay
There was a time that I believed I would always be a college dropout. When I would think about the future, I couldn’t manifest an image of what it would look like. I had no direction, no goals, and no career aspirations. For a while I thought the best thing to do was accept my fate, even if I felt unhappy about where my life was heading.
Eventually, I realized that something in my life would have to change. After spending some time thinking about what to do, I decided to return to school and study engineering, since I was already interested in science and mathematics. Soon enough, I would realize the importance of this life altering decision.
When I took my first chemistry class in my first semester, I looked down at the syllabus and saw all the different scientific topics we would be covering. I liked to learn science in my free time before, but now I was actually doing something productive about it. In that moment it felt like all my failures and self doubt were melting away, and I now felt nothing but pride for myself.
That is why I believe college is important. To me it’s about more than getting a better job or increasing my salary. It’s about finally being able to see a future for myself. Now when I think about the future, I don’t see nothingness; I see a multitude of different paths I might take throughout my life. For the first time ever, I am looking forward to seeing tomorrow, and that is worth everything to me.
