Why Dinner With Abraham Lincoln is Important by Rajpreet - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

Presidents of the United States are important leaders that are expected to achieve greatness and overcome difficulties for the sake of the citizens and country. I would choose to have dinner with Abraham Lincoln because he is a President who fought for all the citizens and went through many obstacles doing so.
The first discussion at dinner would be what the challenges were while leading through the Civil War, for example, permitting his people to imprison citizens who were rioting and fighting. We would also discuss why he was so determined to learn and read at such a young age. In addition, we would talk about how his interest in law sparked and how it led to running for President. Another thing I would ask about is how difficult and challenging it was to teach himself while growing up. The major question would be saved for last, “How did you feel when signing the Emancipation Proclamation?” I have always wondered if he knew it was going to happen eventually, if he felt a sense of victory, or if he hesitated to sign it because of the lack of support from around the world.
Abraham Lincoln accomplished a lot throughout his life, which is why I believe it is important to have an opportunity to meet with him to discuss all the events. Knowing how he led the citizens through the Civil War, how he freed the slaves, and why he wanted to become President will help me understand why he made the decisions that he did.
