It does not matter how great something is, there is always room for changes. Nothing is perfect, and the education system is not an exception to this. There are a few changes that I would like to see in education. Some are with the major itself, and some are with job. In the next ten years I hope to see more people wanting to be education majors, as well as teachers getting paid more. These are two very important things, that I also believe cannot happen without the other.
The first thing I want to see change is more people wanting to go to school to be a teacher. This could be any kind of teacher; primary, secondary, or college level. As a child growing up, I feel like I heard more people say they were going to school to be a teacher. Now, I hardly ever hear this. If I am being honest, I hear more people say they wanted to be an education major but decided against this. I personally have experienced this as well. I believe there is many reasons to this. There is a stereotype that children are becoming ruder and more entitled. Not very many people want to deal with children/ young adults who act like this. These generations are not wanting to be told what to do, and this makes it hard for teachers to teach. Teachers are being ignored and starting to hate their jobs. This causes other people to not want to be teachers. Eventually, we will no longer have teachers, as they have either all quit, or never became one in the first place. There is another reason that I believe is keeping people from becoming education majors, and that is salary.
Salary has always been an issue in education. Teachers have never been paid enough. Many teachers must have another job to afford living. I personally have had at least three teachers who had a weekend or night job to make ends meet. This is not the way a late 20s to early 30s person should live. This should be their best years, but instead they are struggling. I want to see a raise in teacher salaries. Without teachers, we would not have anything we have. Scientist would not be as smart as they are, doctors would not be able to perform outstanding surgeries, if it was not for teachers. No matter the end goal, everyone started out with a teacher at some point. A lot of successful people have even credited childhood teachers who believed in them. Most teachers go above and beyond for their students, only to be one of the worst paying majors. Along with not getting paid enough, teachers must buy some of their own supplies. These people already do not make enough to support themselves, adding these expenses does not help. Many teachers get a budget to buy supplies at the beginning of the school year. No year is the exact same, so one year they might run out of a supply faster than another. After this budget runs out, the teachers must spend their own money to make sure everything their class needs in there.
These are just two of the many changes I hope to see in education. These are changes that need to happen, or education may start to go downhill. In some places, it already has because of these reasons. I hope one day people start to see the importance of education.
