Beyond the Big Picture by Raevyn - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Walking in my sophomore year I was expecting an unpleasant, unbearable women to be my teacher for AVID. Everyone, and I mean everyone, who had Miss. Will the year before had told me the horror stories of being one of her students. However, I decided I was going into this year with a positive attitude. I walked in and immediately got scared. Don’t get me wrong, Miss. Will is a beautiful women, but she has this feel around her. When you talk to her, you don’t want to be wrong. I tried to be the quiet one who just did everything she said.
AVID is a class where students get to learn the in’s and out’s of college. It is suppose to help prepare us to be the best college students possible. That is what Miss. Will wanted from us. She wanted us to start then so when we get to college we would not get overwhelmed. Unfortunately, some people did not understand the big picture. All they were seeing was Miss. Will trying to get us to do this extra work, on top of all the work we already had. I was not one of those. Miss. Will took so much time out of her day to figure out ways where we would understand the big picture. We even grew a plant before the year was over. By the end of the year I ended up seeing a lot more then the big picture.
What Miss. Will really taught me was about a destination. At the beginning of the year I was an average student just trying to get by. I did not have many goals. By Miss. Will trying to show that starting early will help overcome obstacles, I learned that it’s important to know where you want to end up. Without a destination there’s no obstacles to overcome. At the end of the year I had goals, I had a destination. I wanted to go to college at New York University and get my bachelor’s in accounting. To this day that is still where I want to end up. It is hard to see being anywhere else.
Miss. Will has a destination for us. She wants to see us in college, being successful. This horror story ended with everyone waiting to see what happens next.
