Rae Jackson Tutor Scholarship by RaeLynn - April 2024 Scholarship Essay
When I was in middle school I was told college would not be in my future. Dyslexia was such a struggle at that time and it was put in my head that my disability would always be a crutch. I have worked hard everyday to prove them wrong. Through perseverance, I have gained strong time management skills and I have learned to advocate for myself in order to achieve my learning goals.
The first big obstacle was to graduate from the Multisensory Teaching Approach (MTA). I had to push myself to finish the program faster than other students. I was also accepted into a program called AVID (Advance Via Individual Determination) which helped me learn study and public speaking skills. To become a member of AVID, I was required to graduate MTA. This task should have taken two school years to complete. I finished it in 18 weeks. Somehow I knew AVID would change my life.
The AVID teachers kept a close eye on my grades to make sure I maintained a good GPA. If I fell behind in any class, the AVID teachers taught me how to advocate for assistance. I owe so much to the AVID teachers for keeping me on track and reminding me to push myself to achieve my learning goals.
I will never overcome dyslexia completely, but the fire that was ignited seven years ago is still burning in my heart. I strive to prove myself to the world. I won’t stop when I face a challenge. I seek to find support until the challenge is defeated.
