If you could have dinner with any historical figure, whom would you choose? Why? by raejonne - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

If I could have dinner with any historical figure it would have to be president Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson because Lincoln is there because I’m currently taking a history class at the moment and overall I’m learning about these men which is very interesting to me. I've always wanted to meet him, trade jokes, as there are only gentlemen present the bawdy ones he is known for would be acceptable. I think through conversation we might be able to get some kind of a handle on his character. He had many different facets, and I'd like to see beneath the marble.

Lincoln, Roosevelt and Lyndon Johnson would be an interesting conversation. Each faced crises in their administrations that would challenge any man, Roosevelt faced both the war and the depression, Johnson faced the war and the need to improve conditions for the poor, no matter what color they were, and for a southerner, that was quite a challenge, Lincoln faced the war, the war, the war and the war. Nothing in our history really comes up to that conflict, the noble experiment hanging in the balance, and essentially one man, who knew what he had to do, and stayed on the job until it was done.
