Teddy the Trend-setter by Raegan - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

When I close my eyes, I can imagine it vividly. I would walk up to the table and sit down, all the while holding my breath. He would laugh, push his spectacles up on his nose, and talk to me like an old friend. We would talk for hours and hours, he sharing stories of his many travels and adventures, and me soaking up his knowledge and wisdom with excitement and joy.

Admittedly, my fascination with Theodore Roosevelt began with the movie “Night At The Museum.” I’ve always been a fan of Robin Williams, and I thought he played the character of “Teddy” splendidly. The movie brought to light several interesting facts about Teddy, as well as captured the emotions he might’ve felt while in his presidency.

After watching the movie several times, I decided it was time to do some research of my own about Teddy Roosevelt. I found from an article by Cellania that he was the youngest person to become president. This is very encouraging to a young person like me because, although I want to be a pastor and not a president, Teddy proved that you can accomplish goals even while you are young!

In addition to this, I found that Teddy had several jobs before he became president. To name a few, he was a cattle rancher, lawyer, historian, and deputy sheriff. I think this is so cool, and it encourages me that although I am still in the midst of entry-level jobs, they are preparing me for something greater.

To put it simply, people refer to Teddy as a trend-setter, and they couldn’t be more right. He was the first to host a black man in the White House, hire a Jewish person as a cabinet member, win a Nobel Peace Prize, along with many other firsts. He inspires me to go outside of the normal, fight for what I believe in, and never stop persevering until I reach my goals.
