English by Raegan - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
As I type this essay as a senior in high school, I imagine how to answer this essay question. Many things fly through my head, but it seems like an English class would take the number one slot in my opinion. If you look closely and all around the world, there are millions of people that are completely illiterate. From an older generation to a younger one, literacy has seemed to vanish. Following that, if the roles were reversed I would teach English because I want to make literacy more common around the world today.
First and foremost, English can be a hard subject for some to learn. For me and others, it could be a piece of cake. However, there are other people who simply don't adapt to learning abilities quicker than others, so that has to be fixed in order to gain back the literacy. All over social media, I will see a tweet, Facebook status, Instagram post, snap-chat story, or anything you could find with a grammar mistake. Along that, on those social media post's with those grammar mistakes are older people who have been previously taught this. I will also find classmates my own age with the same grammar problems. Some cannot fathom to know where to put their commas, semicolons, colons, periods, etc. If I simply could, I would go back and teach this literacy into the minds of not only students, but anyone who cannot fathom common literacy. I feel as if the world goes on and literacy is continuously decreasing, then the workforce will also decrease. To have a job, you should have common literacy and quite a few jobs require that, so it's essential that literacy is needed.
Although I plan on majoring in elementary education, English is what I would choose to teach if the roles were reversed. English is a common language that everyone should pick up on. It is needed for school, working, and life choices. Not having and understanding literacy could result in many things that could hurt someone anywhere. With the roles reversed, English is the simple subject I would make sure all of my students understood.
