A Year For Resolve by Rachelle - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
With everyone starting the New Year with diet trends, working out in the gym, and promises of change, one New Year's resolution I would implore students to have, is resolve. Resolve is something that works on every level whether you are a friend, student, or parent. The dictionary defines resolve as: to decide firmly on a course of action. Based on the definition provided, a person of resolve must have a detailed plan in order to follow that course of action. For the year of 2016, it is critical for you to have a well thought out plan on how you intend to reach your goals for the year. A person of resolve is knowledgeable of what they want, prepared to make steps to get what they want, and accountable for their own action/inaction in pursuing what they want. Not many people are gifted with resolve and fall prey to temptation, laziness, or fear. In order to have resolve, you must have self-motivation, accountability, and the capability to find solutions to your own problems.
Typically, as a student, our primary goal is to gain knowledge and finish our education. This takes a considerable amount of resolve, especially when there are barriers and distractions in your way. A student without resolve, if they are not doing well in class, they may ask a few students during class about the homework. This person may even speak with the professor a few times, but at the end of the day, they are content with receiving a C just because it's a passing grade. On the other hand, a student with resolve having difficulties in class will try different online websites. If that doesn't help, then that student will go see a tutor. If that doesn't help, that student will set up a meeting with the teacher in order to find a possible solution to his or her problem. Whatever it is that student decides to do, they will make sure to exhaust multiple resources in order to do it. It's easy to complain and say life is too hard or your too busy, but that is also an easy way of not being responsible for the outcome of your life. For example, I constantly hear people point out how skinny I am despite how much I eat and wish they were that young again so they could eat whatever they wanted too. When I point out that I also workout, tend to avoid fast-food, and drink water on a regular basis it's dismissed as a small detail. When I additionally point out that there are people who are older and heavier than they are and are still able to lose weight that is also dismissed.
In conclusion, I say all that to say this, it's easy to blame all of your circumstances and failures on outside forces that you have no ability to control, but someone with resolve will take control and stay on the path to accomplishing their goal and that is why I believe it is a resolution everyone could benefit from. As Helen Keller once said, “Your success and happiness lie in you. Resolve to keep happy, and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.”
