Dinner With Hollywood's Hitchcock by Rachel - February 2016 Scholarship Essay

Alfred Hitchcock, although he was born in London, England, he became one of Hollywood’s most successful directors of all time. His first few films were made in England in the 1920’s. The first film he made in America, entitled Rebecca, won an Academy Award for Best Picture. He continued making films until his death in 1980. During his lifetime, he made over 50 films, including the first “horror” movie, Psycho, and a television series. He revolutionized the movie industry with his unique creativity and flawless method off storytelling.
More than thirty years after his death, the movies a young person watches now have been influenced by the techniques of Hitchcock. Certain camera angles, plot twists, and even adding in effects later are all part of Hitchcock’s legacy contained in modern films. A young filmmaker or storyteller could talk with Hitchcock for hours on the best way to ensnare an audience. His nickname being “Master of Suspense”, Hitchcock would have an arsenal full of advice for anyone seeking to pursue a creative writing, filmmaking or even acting career.
In addition, his quirky personality bled through the camera lens and onto the screen in the form of comic relief in all of his films. Professional experience aside, he would be a decidedly interesting person to talk to. He was personally familiar with big names such as James Stewart, Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, and Gregory Peck.
Out of any of the creative geniuses that have walked on this earth, Alfred Hitchcock tops them all, leaving behind a legacy that revolutionized a whole industry in a short amount of time. The “Master of Suspense” is clearly the master also of creativity, storytelling, and excitement. The world is darkened without his presence.
