My Dream Job: A Lifetime of Learning and Teaching by Rachel - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

I have had several goals in my life; some I have accomplished, others not. However, the biggest goal I have in my life is a career goal. Ever since I was a tiny little kid, I wanted to be a teacher. Not just any teacher, a first grade teacher. As I have grown and matured, that desire to teach has not left me. My goals however, have shifted just a bit. Right now, I am a Sophomore at Brigham Young University (BYU) studying Early Childhood Education with minors in Spanish dual language and music. My goal is to become a teacher and teach in areas of the world and the United States where children either do not have the opportunity to receive an education or where children are not motivated to learn.
This dream and goal came about when I, myself, was a first grader. My first grade teacher was amazing. She encouraged all her students, was involved in each of their lives, and really instilled a love of learning within each of her students, but especially me. I loved going to school and looked forward to learning new things every day. My first grade teacher helped me develop such a passion for learning, that I loved going to school, even to this very day. I love to learn and share the things I learn with those around me. As a teacher, I hope to help develop that passion for learning in my own future students. When young children have a strong passion for learning, they will carry it with them throughout their whole life. A passion for learning leads to improved technology, medicine, and an improved society as a whole. It leads to understanding between people and nations and they learn about each other. Helping young children develop a love for learning is just one of my many goals for my career.
Another reason why becoming a teacher is my dream job is because education is the way to a better life and a brighter future. I would love to teach in areas in the world where children, especially girls do not have the opportunity to receive an education. I have been in Ecuador for the last few months and I saw a lot of children unable to attend school because their families could not afford the tuition. These children are not receiving an education, therefore, the cycle of poverty will continue. I want to teach those children, especially in Latin America, and help them create a brighter future for them and their families. While in Ecuador, I learned that if the people are bilingual and speak English as well as Spanish, they have many more opportunities for jobs. Likewise, in America, people who speak Spanish, have more opportunities in the work field. Education is the only way to help people overcome and break the cycle of poverty.
College is helping me to achieve this goal and dream job of becoming a teacher by giving me the training and tools I will need as I enter the work field. At school, I am continuing to develop my passion for learning and teaching. I am learning and understanding the importance of child development and the best ways to teach young children. I am practicing teaching small groups of young children so that I am prepared when I enter the work field. Also, Brigham Young University has several opportunities for me to travel to different parts of the world to teach and help the children. I plan on taking advantage of those opportunities to help and serve children all over the world.
Education truly is the best thing we can give to the children of the world. By becoming a teacher, I will help them develop a passion for learning and help them break the cycle of poverty. My dream is to become a teacher for those very reasons; to help and serve other people.
