Overcome Obstacles by Rachel - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
The word I have chose to describe why I wish to attend college will have to be, overcome. The word overcome is defined by succeeding or dealing with a problem difficulty. I believe that attending college will be an obstacle for me but, by graduating college I will be able to tell others that I have overcome many obstacles to get to where I am.
Many people that wish to go to college tend to have set backs because of the bumps they have towards getting there. Many will be too lazy to continue on with what they would like to achieve, but I am not. I like when people try to prove me wrong or try and tell me that the goal I want to achieve is unlikely. Like other students, I too have traveled bumpy roads to get to where I am today, and I will not let one person or class get in the way of letting me overcome my achievements. The obstacles I have gone through have strengthen me and helped me overcome my goals. Wanting to become a female engineering is hard. Getting a degree in engineering in general is difficult but being a women in industry is harder. Statistics show that from the years 1984- 2008 about seventeen percent of women receive bachelor degrees in engineer. Since 2008 that number has only increased by ten percent. Reading these statics more than likely frightens many pursing female engineers, but I am not. I have put a lot of effort in engineering class work and time to let these numbers stop my goal of becoming an engineer.
In high school, I have overcome too many obstacles to just stop my education. In college, will also be awarded with a plethora of many more obstacles and I cannot wait to overcome those also. Like my mom tells me, carry your scars like badges of honor.
