MN by Rachel - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If I could teach any high school class, I would chose psychology. Psychology has always been a class that I have been very interested in, because I believe that it is very useful in and out of the classroom. I believe that psychology should be taught at every high school in the country because students can learn so much that will help them for the rest of their life. I would like to teach psychology to spread information about mental illness, have an impact on students life's and prevent bullying.
Mental illness is a very big issue in society today. Many different types of mental illness are covered in psychology courses. If students new more about mental illness, they could detect it in there friends and help there classmates and friends get the help that they need. Everybody has someone they know that suffers from a mental illness, but they don't realize it because it is not taught enough. If more people new about mental illnesses, suicides, shootings and bullying could be prevented.
I believe that psychology is one of the classes that what you get out from it is more important than your grade. A student might strive for an A the whole course but not realize the importance of the information learned. My psychology teacher made it clear to us that this class is going to be useful for the rest of your life. The information learned in psychology has a big impact on a students life and I would like to help make that impact to the students.
Bullying is a topic covered in psychology at Prior lake High School. Although it doesn't really go with the course, it is a very important topic to be learned. I would teach students to stand up for there peers and prevent bullying. By teaching this I could have an impact on students being affected by bullying and make their high school career better by eliminating the bullying. Maybe students would be nicer to each other and accept each others differences and values.
Psychology has been one of my favorite courses throughout high school, partially because of my psychology teacher. She taught us life long lessons and information that is very useful in high school. If I was a teacher I would want to be a psychology teacher just like her to make that impact on high school students. I would teach psychology to spread mental illness awareness, make an impact on students and prevent bullying. I hope that some day all high schoolers have the opportunity to gain the information the I did from psychology.
