Knowing What I Know Now, Make Sure to Know Each Other by Rachel - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
“If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples, then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas,” George Bernard Shaw once said.
As a non-traditional, returning student there is one piece of advice that I personally find most valuable in the above quote, sent to me by my father: knowledge is contagious and its simply unfair not to share it. I feel that the greatest ideas in my career have been comprised of many individual thoughts squished together in a team setting. I feel most powerful when in groups that support my ideas and give feedback on how things could be better. Knowledge is a wonderful gift that should be shared.
Knowing what I know now, I would've made more of an effort to join groups that I was passionate about, voice my opinions to be heard, and share the knowledge I had obtained. The exposure that the college setting creates for a student is terrific when trying to make yourself known and express your thoughts and beliefs. The relationships that I had built in previous years are so valuable to me, not only because of the friendships that were made, but the morals, values, ideas, and thoughts that I had learned from those people.
So, here is my advice to you. Open up, listen up, stand up, and be GREAT.
