What Elective do I Think Should Become a Required Course by Quion - January 2023 Scholarship Essay

There are a multitude of electives to choose from. Some of them should be a required course, but some of them are fine just being electives. I am only able to provide information based on the school I go to, however the elective I have chosen to write this essay about may peak the interest of the readers. Therefore the elective that I have chosen for this essay is any form of music elective.

As it is known music is called the universal language. Plenty of songs that are created have messages that are great to use in everyday life. For example take a look at the song "Bigger" sung by the "Queen of the Hive" Beyonce. This song explains that everyone in this world is "part of something way bigger". She elaborates that we do not know what we are meant to be a part of, however she goes on in the song to say that no matter how hard it gets that "you're gonna rise", and be "a part of something way bigger". She says it is "bigger then you" and "bigger then me". This one song taught people that no matter who you are that there is something bigger for you to be a part of. Music can help students that are really hard at expressing their emotions, and are generally shy to express their emotions through the power of music. Powerful messages have been expressed through music, and it is a great way to communicate to other people.

Finding out that music is a universal language helps others communicate, but it can also lead to finding things about yourself. Most people do not believe that instruments are nerdy, bland, and boring, however if people give it a chance and actually try to learn; you can find that it can be anything but that. It is said that musical instruments say a lot about the player. Trumpets are the "arrogant" players, saxophones are considered the "relaxed" players. I for one was a student who wanted to play the flute, but the flute was not all I thought it would be. After trying out my band director placed me on the tenor saxophone, and it has changed my life. To this day I have been playing the saxophone since the fourth grade, and have not stopped playing it since. The instrument is like an extension of who I am. I have one competitions, played with orchestras, gained the highest rating playing solos, and was selected to play in the district honor band. I recommend that for everyone try a instrument for at least a month. To learn, to understand, and to better understand yourself.

These are just a few reasons as to why I believe any music course should be a required course. It can help people find out what they like, understand who they are, and better express themselves. This essay explains why I believe that music should be a required a course in all school districts across the world.
