Why I have chosen a life as a night owl. by Quinn - January 2019 Scholarship Essay
I can remember becoming a "night owl" at a young age. My parents would tell me "it's time to go to bed!", but I defied their commands, and would spend countless nights reading until three o' clock or later. This practice got a bit tricky as I was growing up, as my father would leave sporadically to haul a load of freight to a rig site.
As I grew up and went through school, I did not mind being up until the wee hours. I would find myself waiting to do homework until midnight, only to fall asleep for a few hours before the rooster's crow. In college, I still keep true to this practice. The saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" (The "ain't" comes from a life of speaking "Oklahoman"). I have written my best works at night, had my best ideas come to me at night, and gotten the best grades I could by working through the night.
If I had to tell someone why this works for me, I would only be pretending to know. Perhaps it's the silence and stillness that the night provides, when our advanced world pushes more and more "hustle and bustle." It's easier to "turn off", and calmly focus on one thing when everyone else has ended their distractions by tucking into a nights sleep. I will keep working through the night, now and for the foreseeable future.
