Inspiration Come Unexpectedly by Quantalyn - November 2022 Scholarship Essay

This year I was informed by my advisor that I would need to complete one more English class to qualify for the nursing program to which I am applying. I had already taken two English classes so I wasn't that excited about it, however I am good at literature so I was prepared for it to be an easy class I just had to get through. The class that best fit my schedule was Literature of the African Diaspora. I did not know what to expect , but on the first day I found that the class would Probably be enjoyable because it was discussing topics that I find very interesting and relevant to me. The class ended up being about the study of Black women's abilities to love themselves and others in societies with a base in Patriarchal views.The required reading for the class were about women from different countries, economic statuses, ages and backgrounds. However I found that I could identify with many of the women and girls in these stories.
This is where the unexpected inspiration comes from. It was very inspiring to me to find out my
life experiences were not only things that I experienced. For many years I felt like I could not identify with many people because I thought that the things I went through in childhood were unique to me. This inspired me to take a better outlook on my life and past. I now feel that my experiences are not unique to me and I can use them to bond with others when I get into my career of choice. It gives me hope that I will be able to do my job as a nurse better and advocate for those in need because I have a understanding about what they need. It also gives me hope that I will be able to be an inspiration to others because I will be able to I overcame my struggles and achieved my goals and their is hope for others that had the same background and struggles to do the same.
